2 out of 5 stars Disappointing   December 25, 2008

Initially, I liked this product. I have what's billed as the newer version, and it seems to have corrected some of the problems described in earlier reviews. However, we ran into a few problems with it, anyway.

The set up was very simple - it was easy to set up the feeding times, and it was nice that the portion for each feeding could be set independently, so one meal could be a different amount than the others. However, I was disappointed that the amounts were so limited - as in 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, etc. Certainly isn't meant to feed small portions. Plus my fat cat needs to have her amount of food adjusted downward as she loses weight, and that's impossible to do.

Our cat was able to get her paw up and get additional food out whenever she wanted some. And when the canister is full, the weight of the food causes food to drop through the plastic dispensing fingers. So extra food was frequently available. Needless to say, the fat cat didn't lose any weight with this feeder.

I think it's a fine feeder if absolute amount of feeding isn't as important. If you want food to be dispensed a couple of times a day when you're at work, this would work. But I wouldn't depend on accuracy with it.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful item   December 25, 2008

5 out of 5 stars BEST THING SINCE APPLE PIE   December 20, 2008
THIS IS MY SECOND ONE. I PURCHASED MY FIRST ONE LAST MINUTE BEFOR A 5 DAY BIZ TRIP AT A RETAIL
PET STORE. THE FIRST ONE STOPPED WORKING WITHIN A DAY. IT WAS REPLACED WITH NO PROBLEM AT THE
LAST MINUTE BEFOR OUR TRIP. WORKED FINE AND NOBODY WENT WITHOUT FOOD. I HAS BEEN WORKING
TWICE A DAY NOW FOR 3 MONTHS WITHOUT A PROBLEM. PURCHASED THIS ONE FOR A XMAS GIFT AND THIS
IS A MUCH BETTER BARGAIN THAN THE FIRST. THIS IS A GREAT PRODUCT.

I have had this feeder for about 1.5 years now (original version). Still running on the original batteries. The clock does tend to drift off on a regular basis, but nothing that throws it off too much. I feed two cats twice a day.

Pros:
- Big kitty gets a little better portion control
- Neither kitty wakes me up at 6AM wanting food
- We can go on vacation without concern the big kitty will eat 4 days of food in an hour
- I work late a lot so no worries about the cats not being fed

Cons:
- Programming not obvious
- Clock drifts
- Feeds a bit too much on the lowest setting
- Big kitty paws at it to drop more food (fixed with a piece of tape)
- Not easy to clean

I ended up putting a piece of paper in the middle over the paddle wheel to limit the amount of food entering. I also put another piece of paper and tape on the outlet to stop the big kitty from pawing for food. This device is without a doubt far from perfect, but worth the investment for sure. When that motor starts turning the big and little kitty go running for their food.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin.   December 18, 2008
After looking at many, many different kinds of automatic/timed pet feeders on Amazon and other websites, I decided to go with the Petmate Le Bistro auto feeder, and I'm very glad I did.

First, the good. The unit allows you to program up to three feeding times in a 24-hour period, and you program them by entering the actual time(s) you want your pet fed, not by saying "every four hours" or something like other feeders require. You can also set the amount of food to be dispensed at feeding time, anywhere from 1/4 cup to 1 cup in 1/4 cup increments. I've been keeping an eye on it for a few days now, and my cat Sorbet hasn't missed a feeding, so everything is working as advertised. Now Sorbet doesn't bother me every time I walk in the door, which is fantastic.

Now for the (not really) bad points. The feeder will work with dry food only, so I had to transition Sorbet off her wet food before using it. I knew about this before purchasing, though. Also, programming the feeder is, as several people have said, quite counter-intuitive; but once you've programmed it, it works without incident. Lastly, turning off the unit or changing the batteries wipes the program memory, so you'll have to reset everything in these cases.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the feeder. If you buy one, just know that it requires dry food, and the programming leaves a little to be desired. Five stars.
